Fraud Schemes Using the IRS Name


We have become aware of some fraud schemes that relate to the use of the IRS name in the hopes that this will draw victims into a trap. The schemes can take place through email, fax, or the phone.


Emails:
When they take place through emails, they are called “phishing” schemes. Please be aware that many of these emails may be a virus. It is important to know that the IRS will never randomly email you regarding your account with them. If you receive an email from the IRS regarding a tax refund or payroll taxes, this is probably a virus.


Fax:
Another scheme is done by using faxes that ask the recipient to complete forms with information on them that will then be used to steal the identity of the victim.


Phone:
Yet another scheme involves phone calls about the economic stimulus payment in which the person impersonates an IRS Employee and asks for taxpayer information to be able to process the payment. However, the information is used for identity theft.
